Program Requirements

To participate in the Construction and Renovation program in Tanzania with WWH International Volunteering, there are several requirements that applicants must meet. These include:

Age: Most volunteering require participants to be at least 18 years old. Some programs may have a minimum age requirement of 21 or even 25 due to the physical nature of construction work.

Experience and Skills: Prior experience in construction, building trades, architecture, engineering, or related fields is highly valued but not always mandatory. Basic knowledge of construction techniques and tools can be beneficial.

Physical Fitness: Construction work often involves manual labor such as lifting heavy materials, digging trenches, and working outdoors for extended periods. You should possess good overall physical fitness, endurance, stamina, and flexibility to handle the demands of the projects.

Language Proficiency: A good command of English is usually required as it serves as the primary language of communication within most volunteering organizations. However, in some instances, such as rural areas, the local Swahili language proficiency might also be beneficial for effective communication with community members.

Health Requirements: As you will engage in physically demanding tasks, you should ensure you are medically fit. Provide documentation demonstrating your overall health status. It’s essential to check if any vaccinations are recommended by global health organizations before traveling.

Adaptability and Cultural Sensitivity: Volunteering abroad entails adapting quickly to different cultural practices, norms, beliefs, and living conditions. Tanzanian culture has its unique aspects, respecting which is crucial. Be open-minded, tolerant, and respectful towards diverse perspectives, cultures, lifestyles, and ways of doing things.

Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills: Construction projects typically involve working closely with other volunteers, local workers, and community members. Collaboration, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are highly valued attributes.

WWH International Volunteering values the diversity of our volunteers and welcomes individuals from various backgrounds who are committed to making a difference in education.

Duration and Location

The duration of our teaching program is flexible based on your availability and can range from several weeks up to several months. We offer placements across various regions within Tanzania including rural areas where educational resources are limited but much needed.

There will be a coordinator who’ll assist and guide you, telling you what work needs to be done, and how you can offer your best help in the situation. This program is available throughout the year

Living Arrangements and Accommodation

WWH International Volunteering will arrange suitable accommodation near project locations for all volunteers. Our accommodations aim to provide comfort while immersing you in the local environment.

Accommodations may vary but usually include shared rooms (based on gender), common areas for relaxation/socializing/cooking facilities (if applicable), access to electricity/water supply (although intermittent outages may occur), and basic amenities.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  1. Project Planning: Collaborate with local stakeholders, together with project coordinators, to develop detailed plans for each initiative. This includes determining materials needed, timelines, budgets, safety measures, and engaging community members throughout the process. Community participation fosters ownership of projects, enabling long-term sustainability even after volunteers complete their placements.
  2. Construction Activities: Utilize your skills under professional supervision during various stages of construction. Working with hand tools, power tools, mixing concrete, lifting heavy materials, foundation laying, cementing walls, flooring installations, wiring systems, in addition to painting and finishing touches are typical activities. Volunteers without prior experience but eager to learn are also welcome; training opportunities might be available based on project requirements.
  3. Teamwork and Collaboration: Engage closely with fellow volunteers, local workers, and community members. Working collaboratively fosters an inclusive environment, enabling the exchange of ideas, skills, and cultural experiences. It’s through teamwork that projects are successfully completed and communities empowered.
  4. Capacity Building: Apart from physical construction work, you may have opportunities to facilitate training sessions or workshops for local individuals on construction techniques, safety practices, maintenance skills, or other relevant topics. These capacity-building initiatives ensure knowledge transfer and empower community members to sustainably manage and maintain infrastructure in the long run
